Shadows of the Nexus

Context

One of the classes in my Digital Game Design program for the Master's in Design (M.Des) degree at Shenkar focused on developing a concept for a AAA game with AI assistance. The project involved comprehensive world-building, including creating a narrative, designing a protagonist and two NPCs, and developing game mechanics. Additionally, I've worked on character outfits, weapons, loot systems, badges, and the game logo. The final deliverable was a trailer showcasing the game concept.

AI tools played a pivotal role throughout the process, accelerating idea generation and refining designs. They facilitated tasks such as generating visuals, conceptualizing gameplay mechanics, and enhancing creative outputs, making the development process more efficient and innovative.

Progress

The entire process of creating the game concept took approximately two months. The first month was dedicated to world-building, character design, and developing the game mechanics. During the second month, the focus shifted to creating a trailer and refining the overall game concept.

AI tools played a crucial role in streamlining the process and generating creative ideas. These tools were instrumental in tasks such as world-building, character design, and trailer creation, providing an efficient and innovative way to bring the game concept to life. The final trailer served as a compelling showcase of the project, highlighting its key elements and creative vision.

Technical Challenges

Try building the game concept with the assistance of AI tools and still be creative and original. The entire process was iterative and required a lot of experimentation with the AI tools until getting the right result.,

  • Diffusion
    • Get consistency models generation from Midjourney using a trained models from krea.ai and then use the generated images to create a trailer.
  • Video
    • Build a complete trailer from generated short videos of 5 seconds each and then edit them together to create a 30 secondes trailer.
  • Speech
    • Lips synchronization of the generated video with the generated speech is a challenge. The AI tools used for this project were not able to generate a perfect lips dub synchronization.

Skills Acquired

I've learned how to effectively use AI tools and craft prompts to generate the right images for my project. These tools significantly accelerated the process and provided valuable inspiration, though it was still a challenge to ensure the results were creative and aligned with my vision. Additionally, I gained experience using AI tools to create a polished trailer and refine the overall game concept.

Conclusion

The project was a valuable learning experience, allowing me to explore the potential of AI in game development. I gained insights into how AI can enhance creativity and streamline workflows, while also recognizing the importance of maintaining a human touch in the creative process. The final trailer effectively showcased the game concept, highlighting the unique elements and creative vision behind the project.
